You have spent weeks planning, packing, and getting ready for your move. Unfortunately, when you move between November to March, the weather is unpredictable, and anything can happen. It’s wise to be prepared for a winter storm by creating a checklist for alternative plans in case you need to reschedule. Here are some things to include on your list.
Check the Moving Companies Weather Policy
If you have hired a professional moving company, it is a good idea to give them a call and ask about their weather policy. Find out how they handle blizzards, freezing rain, and other winter-related activity. Many responsible moving companies want to keep their team safe and have a plan for adverse weather conditions. Some plans include that the movers load the truck as much as possible and then return when the weather settles down. Sometimes when conditions on the road are dangerous, the movers will find somewhere safe to pull over and park. They will wait until the streets are safe to travel.
Call Your Realtor
If your realtor isn’t aware of the weather report, it’s a good idea to let them know that there is a storm coming. Inform the realtor that you could have to delay vacating the property and ask them what needs to be done. Real estate transactions can affect everyone in the transaction. Don’t worry; everything always works out in the end.
Storm Safety Plan
One of the things you need to consider is how you manage your family during a winter storm. Think about these factors:
- What is the distance to where you are moving?
- Is there a hotel close by?
- Can you stay with friends or family?
It’s not fun for the whole family when you stay in an empty house with no power and no food in the fridge. It could be a better idea to stay at a hotel or with family. If the weather report only forecasts a few inches of snow, then this isn’t going to be a problem. When you have an ice storm coming and below-freezing temperatures, you need to get your family somewhere safe. Ice storms can create havoc and long delays compared to rain or snow. If you are expecting an ice storm, plan to stay somewhere for several days. Your contingency plan must include a cooler loaded with sandwiches, snacks, and drinks. Remember that many restaurants won’t open when the power’s out. Make sure that you bring lots of warm blankets, flares, and chargers for the car if you run into car trouble or get involved in an accident.
Clean House
When the weather is snowy, icy, and wet, nothing will keep your floors clean.
Do your best to avoid scuffs and mud by laying down heavy cardboard throughout your highest traffic areas. If you hire professional movers, they usually come with unique floor runners that protect your floors from damage and slipping. Try to vacuum and mop your hardwoods once everything is inside your new home. If you have carpet, it’s a good idea to schedule a carpet cleaning.
Sadly, when you get delayed by weather, there isn’t much that you can do to speed things up. For some, relaxing could be a challenge. Try your best to relax and realize that you will be in your new home soon.
