Moving Mistakes, Avoid The Random Guy with the Truck

Moving Mistakes, Avoid The Random Guy with the Truck

When you are considering hiring a mover, you also must consider your budget. Quality moving companies can be expensive, especially in the summer busy season. The cliché “you get what you pay for” is true, especially when moving. Would you trust your household goods to some guy and his buddy from a classified website who bought their truck for $1000 and hand-lettered the side?

Sound sketchy! You have worked hard in life to get to where you are, and your possessions are much more precious than you know.  We highly recommend hiring professionals that have insurance and who have a solid reputation in your community.

We asked our moving crew for some tips on what to watch out for when looking for a mover. This is what they said:

  • Classified websites with a bad reputation for scams and rogue movers
  • Ads you call that are a personal cell phone number
  • Movers who demand to do estimates over the phone
  • Movers without insurance
  • Movers with no company info or website
  • Movers with negative reviews and no response
  • Movers who demand upfront payment
  • Movers who go by weight
  • Movers without experience or proper training

Make Sure You Cross Check

It’s too easy for scammers and crooks to cheat innocent people looking for a bargain or the lowest price. The bait is the lowest price. You need to call at least three professional moving companies in your area to get an understanding of the rates.  Once you have that information, you can do some research by cross-checking each company online. Look for red flags. Rogue movers use fake ads to pretend they are working for a legit company, in which they are not. If you get scammed, it will be your fault for not checking, and you will have to sue some random person(s) in civil court if you can find them.

Insurance is a Must

When the movers cause damages, they are responsible. Responsible movers are fully insured and will cover the costs of the damages. Many professional moving companies also have a team that does repairs. They are usually very good at it and will have your damaged items looking like new. Cheap movers found on a classified website typically don’t have insurance and will not cover you for damages.

Customer Service and Support

To get a stress-free moving experience, you need customer service and support. We recommend hiring a company or mover that does the following.

  • Answers the phone on the first call
  • Follows Up
  • Gives you an estimate in writing
  • Answers all your questions
  • Gives you references when asked
