TIPS FOR MOVING SENIORS
Room by Room
It a great idea to start packing early and do it slowly. Try not to get overwhelmed and break packing up into smaller tasks so that it is more manageable. Start with one small area, like a closet, and start packing for there. If you already purged, you should have only the essential things that you will be taking with you to your new home.
Use Photos
It’s a great idea to take lots of pictures of things that you need to set up later on. For example, how your TV is connected and cord setup. This strategy can save you a headache when unpacking and getting everything set up in your new home. It is also wise to take pictures of the way some of your rooms and the way they are set up. This will be an excellent resource for you to remember what your old home looked like to make it look as close as possible. Why not take pictures of what is inside each box. Then you can print a copy and tape the photo to the outside of the box. This will allow you to know precisely what is each box.
Be Careful with Heavy Objects
Many items can be heavy and can put you at risk of injury. Avoid throwing out your back by lifting something too heavy. If you get injured, it will make moving more difficult. Make sure that you ask a friend, family member or neighbor for their help. It’s essential to keep your health in mind.
Keep Pathways Clear
You don’t want to trip and get injured while moving, so it’s essential to make sure all pathways are clear. When you find that boxes are in the way of your major walkways, ask for some help to move them. You can put the boxes in the middle of each room, which will allow you to move around easier. If you have a garage, move some boxes there.
Pack the Essentials
To save time and stress, think about the important items that you will need when you arrive at your new home. This box should include things that you use daily and can’t live without. This box should contain some clothes, shoes, toiletries, medications and important documents that you need or use daily. Add some items like bed linens and shower items so that you can feel comfy in your new home. You can also use a suitcase instead of a box. Keep it easily accessible to make life easier.
Hire Professional Movers
This is one of the most important steps because professional movers will have the equipment and experience necessary to ensure a stress-free move. Ensure that you do your research and compare prices. Ask for a senior discount and see if they have the proper insurance to protect your items. Do some cross-checking and hire a moving company that has excellent reviews and ratings. Morrison Moving has a great reputation in Hamilton Ontario because of our transparency and integrity. Make sure that you book several months in advance so that you are not left without a mover at the last minute.
